Digging deep, serving others, setting the example
In 2017, Brian Henderson started with a small YMCA volleyball program; as he worked with the girls, he saw potential in them and a need in the area for an affordable and competitive program, so he founded Hurricane Volleyball Club in 2018. In just two years, the club grew to four Carolina Region USAV teams in the 2019-2020 year, earning gold medals in 3 tournaments in the 14s and 15s age brackets. Going into the 2020-2021 season, Hannah Griffin, a graduate from the Bluefield College volleyball program, took ownership of the club, adding Zonal and National level teams to the program. The intensive positional training, conditioning, and high expectations for athletes, Hurricane Volleyball Club continues to grow athletes to achieve their highest.
The goal of Hurricane Volleyball Club (Canes VBC) is to provide a competitive and affordable Junior Olympic volleyball program where Triad athletes can develop and progress to a higher level. Besides providing affordability, a competitive atmosphere, and development through intense conditioning, our club emphasizes work ethic, consistent technique, and players and coaches displaying fantastic character. Hurricane Volleyball Club exists to develop and assist athletes in pursuing excellence on the court.
Our coaches prioritize work ethic, good attitudes, and a competitive drive. This year, coaches will be looking for athletes who not only dominate on the court, but girls who prioritize demonstrating teamwork and being coachable.

Going into year 8, Hurricane Volleyball Club has demonstrated that they are competitive in the USAV Carolina Region and in various AAU, JVA, and USAV tournaments along the East Coast! Every year, HVC has produced college-committed athletes and helped players become the best version of themselves.
In their first season, the Hurricane Volleyball Club made the quarter finals 4 out of the 6 tournaments in the JR-15 West Carolina Region Volleyball. They also advanced once to the semifinal. The 15U team went on to win the Iron Volleyball Club St. Patrick’s Day Invitational Tournament on 3/17/2019.
In the Coronavirus shorted season, the Hurricane Volleyball Club 14U Team Thunder won two JR-14 West Carolina Region Volleyball tournaments in Valdese and Mt. Airy. In the Valdese tournament, the Hurricane Volleyball Club won by going undefeated. Out of the five tournaments this year they participated in, they won, or made it to semi-finals in three of the five tournaments.
The Hurricane Volleyball Club 14U Team Storm made it to three semifinals out of five tournaments.
Both 16U teams, Hurricanes and Cyclones, made the semifinals in tournament this season.
The club had a great season and participated in its first 2 day tournament at the AAU Super Regional Tournament in Greensboro, NC. The 15U team earned silver and the 17U team came a win shy of making the semifinals.
HVC graduated its first graduating class. Of the 18s age bracket, 1/3 of the athletes signed on to play collegiately for the upcoming season. This past season, HVC offered Regional, Zonal, and National level teams; these teams traveled to tournaments in TN, VA, SC, and NC this season. This year, Hurricanes also began offering Lil Canes, a developmental program for boys and girls ages 8-11.
This season, teams in every age bracket won medals, including tournament wins in the Rocky Mount Spring Fling, Shamrock Gold Division in VA, K2 Madness in the Mountains in TN, Rocky Mount Super Regional, Charlotte AAU Grand Prix in SC, and numerous Carolina Region tournaments. HVC also added the Mini Canes program, developmental training for boys and girls ages 6-8. This was the program's first time offering an extended season which sent players to VA, SC, and NC tournaments throughout an additional month of game play.
In this season, every senior signed to play college volleyball! Our national teams competed in the NEQ in Philly for the first time, and our teams competed in the Regional Championships with our 16s and 18s teams winning medals. We had a full time strength and conditioning coach, and our staff was up to 16 coaches!
This season held one of the most exciting changes for HVC in moving to a new home! In the fall of 2024, Hurricane Volleyball Club began operating out of High Point Christian Academy's brand new gymnasium along with High Point Friends School's gym. HVC brought on new coaching staff and still had teams at every level! HVC fielded it's youngest zonal team yet with our 14s age group, and we had multiple college signees this year with offers from 4 different colleges and universities! HVC players received mindset training to help them with mental toughness and strategies on being a better athlete and teammate.
HVC is excited to be adding a satellite location with teams in Burlington! This location and teams will be known as HVC East! HVC is bringing on two new coaching positions with a Director of Coaching Support and Compliance and a new Strength and Conditioning Coach who will be providing injury prevention training, plyometric training, and workouts for our athletes of all ages and levels in our High Point location. Besides out mindset trainings, players/parents will also have continued access to recruitment training and tips from our director. We are excited for the improvements we are able to make for this coming season!
